The day was perfect for the first cleanup of 2008. The temperature was about 60 when we arrived at the field. We pulled out the lawn tractors and tried to start the Scotts. The battery was dead so we jumped it with Myron's van. The first thing that happened was a bunch of shredded paper flew out of the engine's cooling fins. After cranking for a few seconds the engine started and a great deal of paper flew out. I noticed a fuel leak from the gas line and we shut it down. We pulled the shroud to get at the gas line and found the mouse nest. We cleaned it out and replaced the fuel line we got from one of the airplane mechanics at the airport. The tractor started and was ok. While we were working on the tractor, the other members were working on the impound getting it upright and re-enforcement the legs. Then we worked on pulling the split rail fencing from the swamp along with other stuff that we piled in the weeds several years ago. We expected to find rotted timber but to our surprise the wood was in better shape than we thought. President Dale Teis had an idea that we should use the good split rail fencing to mark the parking area. We tried to come up with a good excuse not to but we failed and we put up the fence. Meanwhile back at the shed, Myron was trying to start the Sears tractor and had problems with it starting. He pulled the top off the engine and the top of both cylinders were packed with paper from two mouse nests. and he found one mouse had been cut in half. We have had problems with the starter before so we pulled it off and Dale will get it fixed. When we finished, Marc and Dave flew their electrics but the wind was pretty strong so we decided to call it a day. Check out the pictures to see how much fun it was.
